Why Your Skin Stays Dry No Matter What You Put On It | Ashleigh's Organics

Itchy, dry skin on forearm Skin Health & Wellness

You've tried every moisturiser on the shelf. You've bought the ones with the long ingredient lists and the expensive packaging. You drink water, you apply cream morning and night - and your skin is still dry, tight, and uncomfortable. If that sounds familiar, the problem probably isn't what you're doing. It's what you're using.

The Real Reason Most Moisturisers Don't Work

Here is something most people are never told: your skin is waterproof. It is designed to keep things out - including water. So when you apply a water-based moisturiser, which is the vast majority of what is sold in UK supermarkets and pharmacies, your skin cannot absorb it. The water sits on the surface, evaporates, and within a few hours you are exactly where you started.

There is a second problem on top of that. Water-based products need preservatives to stop them going off. Then they need additional ingredients to offset those preservatives. By the time you look at what is actually inside most moisturisers, the list is long, complicated, and full of things your skin does not recognise.

Your skin cannot absorb water. It can absorb oil. Most moisturisers are water-based. That is where the problem starts.

What Your Skin Is Actually Built to Absorb

Your skin produces its own natural oil called sebum. Sebum is what keeps your skin barrier intact, supple, and protected. When you apply an oil-based product, your skin recognises it. It can absorb it. The ingredients actually get where they are supposed to go.

This is especially important for anyone dealing with eczema, dermatitis, or persistently dry and reactive skin. These conditions are frequently made worse by the very products marketed for them - because most of them are water-based and cannot do what they promise.

Why Some People Struggle More Than Others

Not all dry skin is the same. For some people it is seasonal - winter and central heating strip moisture from everything, skin included. For others it is chronic. No matter the time of year, no matter what they apply, the skin stays tight, flaky, or reactive.

Chronic dry skin is usually a sign that the skin barrier is compromised. The skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin, responsible for locking moisture in and keeping irritants out. When it is damaged or weakened, everything gets through - cold air, chemicals in products, and everyday friction.

Conditions like eczema, dermatitis, fibromyalgia, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and restless legs syndrome all have skin sensitivity as a component. So can long-term use of harsh or water-based skincare products, which can gradually weaken the barrier further over time. Age is a factor too - the older we get, the less sebum the skin naturally produces.

What to Look for When Nothing Else Has Worked

If you have tried everything the supermarket and pharmacy has to offer and nothing has held, it is worth looking at whether any of those products were actually oil-based. Most are not. Look at the first ingredient on any moisturiser label - if it says water or aqua, it is water-based.

An oil-based moisturiser will have a natural carrier oil as its primary ingredient - something like organic coconut oil, shea butter, or jojoba oil. These are ingredients your skin can work with. They absorb deeply, reinforce the skin barrier, and lock in the skin's own natural moisture rather than just sitting on top of it.

What makes a difference in practice

The simpler the ingredient list, the better. Every additional ingredient is another thing your skin has to process - and for skin that is already sensitive or reactive, that matters. A product with five natural ingredients your skin recognises will almost always outperform one with thirty ingredients you cannot pronounce.

What Customers Say After Making the Switch

"I had itchy eczema for years and tried everything. After the first use I noticed a difference. I started using it on my children too - for nappy rash, dry patches, everything. I will never go back to anything else."

— Customer, Scotland

"The price put me off at first. But after one tub I was completely sold. I buy three at a time now. I have recommended it to my daughter and several friends. Nothing else has ever worked like this."

If You've Been Told It's Just Your Skin Type

A lot of people with chronically dry or reactive skin are told it is just how their skin is. That they have to manage it, not fix it. That is worth questioning. Many customers who had been dealing with dry, uncomfortable skin for years found that switching to an oil-based product was the change that actually made a difference - not another cream, not another expensive formula, just a product their skin could actually absorb.

Your skin is not broken. It may simply never have been given something it can work with.

The Bottom Line

If your moisturiser is water-based and your skin is waterproof, the two were never going to work together. Switching to an oil-based product - one with a short, natural ingredient list - is where most people with persistently dry skin finally start to see results. Most notice a difference within the first use. A visible change within the first week.
